Dating back to the 1964 General Plan for Montgomery County, the Corridor Cities Transitway (CCT) is the Red-Line Extension that links the Shady Grove Metro Station to Clarksburg, with an ultimate extension to Frederick. It is part of the nearly completed I-270/US15 Corridor Study that includes the widening of I-270.

The Upcounty Community must join together to ask our State Elected Officials to support the CCT. The important thing to remember about the CCT is that it is needed now, it is ready to go, and it should be light rail.

CCT must be Light Rail

After looking at the various options, light rail is the preferred mode for the Corridor Cities Transitway for many reasons:

  • Economic development is more likely near light rail transit versus bus.

  • People have a preference for light rail. People will get out of their cars for light rail.

  • Because operator labor costs are the largest portion of the operating costs of any transit system, light rail is more cost effective to operate than bus. Also, as demand increases, cars can be added at no additional personnel cost.

  • Light rail is perceived as more permanent and once in place, operation funding is more secure.

  • Light rail will foster more high quality transit-oriented development.

  • Rail modes tend to be more reliable as well because they are more often located in exclusive or dedicated right-of-way. Reliability tends to be more important to passengers than travel time because passengers want to know when they will arrive at their destination so they can plan their departure time and be confident they will arrive as expected.

Contact your State Senators, State Delegates, Governor, and Secretary of Transportation and let them know you want to secure CCT funding in 2007.
